Vlissengen Road killers caught on camera…Suspected gunman arrested

Kaieteur News understands that the two bandits, who rode a CG motorcycle, were not wearing helmets at the time, and a police source said surveillance cameras, located nearby, gave investigators “very good” images of the suspects.
“We have very good stuff (images)…we are now putting the pieces together,” an official said. Police have detained at least five individuals from areas that include East Ruimveldt, Albouystown, Agricola and Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara.
A brief police release issued yesterday stated that “a suspect in the robbery/murder of businessman Ashook Ragghu which occurred yesterday on Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, has been arrested. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations.”
Ragghu, of Pike Street, Campbellville, was shot in the chest, while his wife, Shyrazadi Ragghu, was shot in the right thigh, at around 14:40 hrs on Monday, after two gunmen on a motorcycle cornered them at the Vlissengen Road and Regent Road traffic light.
The robbers escaped with a bag containing an undisclosed sum of cash and the slain man’s licenced handgun.
Mr. Ragghu has a gold mining operation at Arimu backdam, Cuyuni, and the family recently moved from Berbice to Georgetown.
According to reports, Ragghu had picked up his wife from a city bank and the gunmen, who were apparently trailing the couple, made their move when the victims, heading south along Vlissengen Road, were forced to stop at the traffic light near the Botanical Gardens.
Kaieteur News understands that the gunmen rode up to the couple’s Toyota Carina, PGG 8291, and tried to relieve the businessman of his money. The dredge owner reportedly decided to fight back and the gunmen shot him.
Reports indicate that Mr. Ragghu was unable to get to his firearm since the weapon was in the same money-bag.
Eyewitnesses recalled seeing Mrs. Ragghu screaming in the car with her husband slumped in the driver’s seat.
Kaieteur News understands that a passing taxi driver took the couple to the GPHC where doctors pronounced Ragghu dead. His wife remains hospitalised.
