A 27-year-old labourer reportedly caught stealing a contractor’s electrical saw, was granted $100,000 bail after being charged for Simple Larceny when he appeared in court yesterday.
Lionel De Haley, 27, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara pleaded not guilty to a Simple Larceny charge before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
De Haley is accused of stealing Mohan Surujpaul’s $60,000 electrical saw on August 16, last, at Diamond Housing Scheme.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Seon Blackman, explained that Surujpaul is a contractor who is working on repairs at the Diamond Primary School.
He said that last Saturday (August 16), the defendant visited the construction site and asked for water to drink. He said while there, De Haley took the electrical saw, but someone noticed him and raised an alarm. He was arrested and charged.
His lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat, applied for reasonable bail. He revealed that his client had been charged with assault before, but it was dismissed.
Fung-a-Fat claimed that De Haley, a father of two, saw a “junkie” steal the electric saw and that his client was the one who led them to the place where the “junkie” placed it. He told the court that the article has since been recovered.
However, the Prosecutor objected to bail saying that the accused was positively identified and he may pose a flight-risk. The Corporal also cited the nature and gravity of the offence.
Despite the objections raised, De Haley was granted bail and he is set to make his next court appearance on October 21 at the Providence Magistrates’ Court.
