Dear Editor,
I have observed the efforts by the Government or the Mayor & City Council (I don’t know who is responsible) to clean the drains in the city using the method of excavation and, while this is a good methodology to apply in certain areas, some areas have to be cleaned by dredging, especially those areas that are full of slush mud. An excavator cannot get under a bridge that forms part of the roadway and other bridges that cannot be removed. In my opinion, using an excavator to do that is a waste of money.
My observation is based on work done in my area. After the work was completed there was so much slush mud left in the drains that a child could have walked out of it if they fell in accidently. The only way it could be done properly is if it is done by dredging.
I recall a time when the drains in my area were properly cleaned and that was because they removed bridges and the labourers went into the trenches with buckets and removed the slush mud, which was not left on the parapets for the rain to wash back into the drains, but was immediately removed by trucks. The second time it was done with an excavator, it was a waste of money. I am saying this because I am a concerned citizen who would like to see the city of Georgetown restored to its original beauty and taxpayers’ dollars properly spent.
Right now, works are being done in my area and it seems to be a joke to me and many others. The excavator is pulling up the grass from the trench with a little bit of mud and putting it on the parapet. Who is in charge of these works? Whoever the contractor is, there is no one carrying out inspections on the works being done. Someone in authority needs to inspect the various sites to ensure that monies are being paid for works properly done.
In front of my residence, there is a lot of grass on the parapet; one man comes with a
weed-whacker and cuts half the amount of grass and leaves the other half at the back.
Who pays these individuals? There are no inspections being done, but taxpayers’
monies are being paid out to persons who are not doing what they are being paid to do, and this has been going on over a year. Is this how the Government or Mayor and City Council ensure that taxpayers’ dollars are properly spent? The combined opposition (APNU and AFC) claim that they are concerned about what Government funds are being spent and how it is spent. This in itself is very good, but I think that they should also be concerned about how the works are being done. At the end of the day, are the contractors performing proper works for the monies they are being paid?
