The children in the Paediatric Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) have
scribed messages of peace on posters that will be sent to children at a hospital in Izmir, Turkey (where there has been much publicised civil unrest).
Last Saturday, members of the Rotaract Club of Georgetown, conducted a peace project with the children and their parents under the theme “Creating World Peace.”
According to the Club’s International Service Director, Faqueeda Watson, the project dubbed “World Peace Posters” marked the beginning of a twinning relationship between her Club in Rotary International District 7030 and the Rotaract Club of Cigli, Turkey in District 2440.
She said that the project, which aimed at promoting international peace, was endeavoured upon as a means to foster greater partnerships with Rotaract Clubs around the world; which resultantly will ensure a greater impact in the endeavour to promote peace.
Watson told Kaieteur News that the posters created are part of an exchange project and their counterparts had already completed this phase of the project in Turkey last Friday.
Rotaractors, she said, had spent time reading and interacting with the children in the ward and donated stuffed animals, educational books and art materials to them.
The items handed over by the Club were contributed by Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. and Giftland Office Max.
The Director said that the project was also made possible with the help of Rotarian Brian Hackett
from the Rotary Club of Georgetown, and Rotary Demerara’s Immediate Past President Osbert James.
To further their efforts at promoting world peace, Watson revealed that the Club has also created a Facebook page called “Global Peace Initiative-Rotaract Worldwide.”
That project, she said, aims at encouraging other Rotaract Clubs around the world to create peace projects.
The Rotaract Club of Georgetown is a non-profitable organisation, organised by the Rotary Club of Georgetown. It, like other Rotaract clubs worldwide, comprises of young men and women between the ages 18-30 years.
The Club aims to provide an opportunity for its members to serve the physical and social needs of communities, develop their leadership skills and increase their understanding of the world.
