A 21-year-old mason accused of stealing a motorcycle from the East La Penitence Police Station, was granted $75,000 bail at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Kevon Jordan of Lot 21 Perry Street, Tucville, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore and pleaded not guilty to a charge of simple larceny committed against Leon Smartt.
The court was told that about 18:00 hours on May 8, last, Smartt was heading to Linden on his motorcycle when he encountered some mechanical problems at East La Penitence. He chose to leave his bicycle at the residence of one of his friends in the area.
Later that day, a party of police ranks cracked down on a gambling game in the friend’s yard and arrested three persons. The ranks reportedly noticed the motorcycle and asked who it belonged, but none could give account for it.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Aduni Innis reported that the ranks took the motorcycle and lodged it at the East La Penitence Police Station.
The court heard that Smartt, who later learned about what had transpired, went to the station on May 28, last with relevant documents to retrieve his motorcycle. Upon checking for it, however, police ranks realised it had been removed and launched an investigation which led to Jordan’s arrest.
The Prosecutor said that the man confessed that he stole Smartt’s motorcycle from the compound with an accomplice. Innis said that he led police ranks to a house in Sophia, Georgetown where it was found.
He was subsequently charged. He is set to return to court on October 3.
