The owner of a mixed-breed dog which attacked a South Ruimveldt Park resident as he was cleaning his parapet was released on $75,000 bail after appearing at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Marissa Hartman is charged with being the owner of a ferocious dog, which she left at large. The unmuzzled animal injured Weldon Harper on August 5, last at South Ruimveldt Park, Georgetown.
Hartman, a 24-year-old teacher of North Ruimveldt Secondary School, pleaded not guilty before presiding Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
According to Police Prosecutor, Corporal Aduni Innis, Harper was cleaning the parapet and the drain at the front of his yard about 08:45 hours that day when the dog called “Rusty” attacked and bit him.
Harper was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was treated. The court heard that this is the second time that the said dog has attacked Harper.
Hartman was represented by Attorney at Law, Roger Yearwood who requested reasonable bail. He stated that the woman was not a flight risk and that she was willing to report to any police station if deemed a necessary condition for bail.
His application was met with objections from the Prosecutor who urged the court to consider the nature of the offence. This was however overruled, and bail was granted.
The case will be called again before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 29.
