More than 200 youths from all parts of the country completed a five-day camp hosted by the Guyana Police Force at Kuru Kuru on the Linden/ Soesdyke Highway.
The camp which concluded last Friday was headed by Senior Superintendent Maxine Graham and was done in collaboration with the Police Women’s Association.
Participants were exposed to craftwork, educational talks, public speaking, religious education and a lecture on the country’s laws. They also played games and were taken for a trip to Linden.
At a closing ceremony held at the camp site, four youths were presented with a monetary award for being responsible and well mannered throughout the days spent at the camp.
According to Graham, the camp was a success despite a few hiccups. She explained that the children had a lot of fun and they have already made a request to return next year.
The camp was held under the theme “Empowering Youth through Social Partnership and Team Building for a Better Guyana.” Participants were between the ages of nine and 14 years old.
According to acting Commissioner of Police, Balram Persaud, managing a camp with over 200 persons is not easy especially when they came from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
“It is our duty to ensure that any youth who came in contact with the police must leave with a positive impact and our forming of youth and scouts groups countrywide is a testimony to the work that we are doing in this country”, Persaud said.
He explained that the camp was fully funded by the Guyana Police Force. “This camp would not have materialized had it not been for the generosity of the corporate sector who have partnered with the Divisional Commanders to ensure that we have this camp.
“Every child is a diamond and it is up to us to cut and polish that gem to make them valuable. That is what we are doing with this camp.”
One youth from Tiger Bay, Latasha Howard, said that the camp has taught her a lot about life and how she should react in various situations. She said that joining the camp next year is a must for her and her friends.
Kaieteur News was told that the children were selected from various communities so that they can get “a break” from their everyday lives and the environment in which they live.
