Agricultural and trade relations between Guyana and Panama have been enhanced with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Thursday last.
This collaboration would be fruitful since Guyana is an agricultural giant in CARICOM and Panama is an economic hub in Central America.
In a press statement issued on Saturday, Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said the MOU is intended to facilitate a partnership between the two countries for scientists and agricultural research institutions to enhance agriculture and trade among other countries in CARICOM and Central American.
He noted that the areas identified for collaboration include, but are not limited to; rice, fruits, vegetables, milk, meat, fish and other fields related to agriculture. The activities and programs of cooperation will be achieved through exchange of delegations of experts, scientists and technicians; seed crops and animal breeds; information and technical documents; trade in agro-products; joint organization of technical seminars, workshops and conferences, coordination of research projects of interest to both countries, among others.
“The MOU gives effect to the intention of President Donald Ramotar and President Juan Carlos Varela of Panama to develop stronger ties between Guyana and Panama and between CARICOM and Central America,” Dr. Ramsammy said.
According to Dr. Ramsammy, the MOU commits both countries to collaborate in various areas of agriculture development and trade. It includes regular meeting at six-month intervals with meetings alternating between Guyana and Panama.
He noted that the Panamanian President committed to sending a team to Guyana for Guyana’s first National Agriculture Research Conference. He committed also to visiting Guyana as soon as possible to work out more extensive collaboration with Guyana in other development areas, Dr. Ramsammy added.
