– to face several other charges
Two youths who set fire to an Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara house after beating and robbing its 81-year old owner last Tuesday night were remanded to prison by Magistrate Zamena Ali when they appeared at the
Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The two youths, Kevin Gulliver, 21 and 17-year old Delroy Canterbury were charged with setting fire to the dwelling house of octogenarian Dorrell Canterbury, completely destroying the two -storey property.
The youths who were unrepresented by counsel were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
They implicated each other while in court, with one of them confessing that he helped the elderly woman out of the house after his colleague doused the place with gasoline and set fire to it.
The other accused blamed his colleague for masterminding the operation.
According to the police, both Canterbury, who is a close relative of the victim, and Gulliver went to the woman’s Lot, 6, Nimrod Street, Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara house with the intention of robbing her.
While there, the 81 year old woman, who lives alone, put up a fierce struggle, which resulted in her receiving several blows about her body from the two accused.
The police were told that the two youths kept Miss Canterbury hostage for hours beating her, and had even planned on killing her.
However, one of them rejected the fatal plan and so they agreed on breaking her arm instead.
They then set the elderly woman’s house alight after stashing a bag filled with some of the valuables from the house, including electronic items in her yard.
A policeman in the area saw the flames and whilst responding, noticed a young man dashing down the stairs of the burning building.
The policeman apprehended the teenager who eventually led ranks to his accomplice who was hiding under a bed at his parents’ Ann’s Grove home.
They were both taken into police custody late Tuesday night.
On Friday, as they were being transported by the police to court, a smiling Gulliver showed very little remorse for his actions, even as angry relatives tried to distance themselves.
As a matter of fact, the incident has left most of the East Coast villages of Ann’s Grove and Two Friends in a state of shock.
Meanwhile, Dorrell Canterbury remains in hospital receiving treatment for the injuries she suffered as a result of the beating at the hands of the two accused, who will definitely face more charges.
They are to return to court on September 23rd.
The matter is being investigated by Corporal Samsundar of the Cove and John Criminal Investigations Department.
