T and T overcome Leewards
By Zaheer Mohamed
Opener Gidron Pope stoked a commanding half century to guide Windward Islands to a nine-wicket victory over Jamaica in the seventh round of the Regional U-19 50-over tournament yesterday. Pope slammed eight fours and one six as Windwards successfully chased 141, ending on 142-1 after facing 38.4 overs on a disappointing day for the Jamaicans.
Jamaica’s decision to bat at Georgetown Cricket Club failed to materialize as they were sent packing in 45.4 overs. Ramaal Lewis played the lone hand with an undefeated 49 which contained four fours and one maximum off 98 balls. Windward Islands new ball pair of Sherman Lewis and Craig Phillip made early inroads, Lewis sent back Odaine Mc Catty (04) and Phillip accounted for Leroy Lugg (10) to leave the score at 28-2.
Ryan John kept the Jamaicans at bay, he disturbed the stumps of Shahid Crooks (10), had Abijai Mansingh (11) caught by wicket keeper Anson Latchman and sent back Romaine Morris (09) as Jamaica slipped into further trouble at 61-5. Lewis stood firm at the other end, he cracked Lewis, Phillip and John for boundaries and smashed Pope for a maximum, but his efforts were not supported. John and company maintained a decent line as no other batsman managed double figures on an easy pace track. John finished with 4-29; Phillip claimed 2-33 while Lewis, Pope and Hypolite had one each.
Pope and Latchman set Windwards on course with an opening stand of 115. The pair hardly encountered any difficulty. Pope drove Ryon Burnette for four before smashing Gareth Henry over the long on fence. He then hit Crooks and Lewis for fours and brought up his half century off 49 balls. Latchman played the supporting role, but made use of the bad balls. He hit Crooks and Odean Smith for fours and deposited Nicholas Walters for a maximum over long off. Walters (1-16) finally got the breakthrough; he had Pope stumped by Morris for 75. The left handed Pope faced 75 balls and accounted for eight fours and two sixes. Latchman and Melvin Gordon saw their team to safety with further hiccups. Latchman ended on 41 and Gordon on 14. Guyana will play in the final at Everest tomorrow.
At Demerara Cricket Club, Trinidad and Tobago defeated Leeward Islands by five wickets. Leewards posted 250-8 off their allotted 50 overs, batting first. Kacey Carty top scored with 83 not out, Ross Powell cracked 53, Shaquille Martina 38 and Dion Weste 36. Tevin Jadoo snared 3-43, Akil Seetal 2-39 and Justin Joseph 2-60. Trinidad and Tobago replied with 256-5 off 40 overs. Camillo Carimbocas slammed 60 while Brain Christmas hit 57 and Amir Jangoo 44. Jeremiah Louis took 2-42.
