Minister of Natural Resources, Robert Persaud and several other members of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, during a meeting at the Good-Hope Primary School on Wednesday, advised residents of that community about the legitimate procedure involved in acquiring titles for agricultural lands within that area.
Manager of Lands and Survey Commission, Rene Duesbury explained, that residents within the occupancy of Good-Hope would have earlier reported to the Lands and Surveys Commission that they were not equipped with the legitimate documentation in order to acquire farmlands at Good-Hope. As such, that Commission sought approval from the Government which currently facilitates the land registration process.
Residential lands within the Good-Hope boundary however were surveyed already. The process to facilitate the surveying of agricultural lands would commence in a week’s time, Duesbury said.
Minister Robert Persaud informed residents who have legal documentation for agricultural lands at Good-Hope that their case for entitlement would be engaged, firstly, with the surveying of those lands. He reminded that the agricultural lands in question would have to be regularised in order for persons to get legal ownership.
Persaud however, cautioned persons who are squatting and those who are falsely claiming lands, to desist from that practice.
Persaud reminded that a similar process continues nationally. He said the process that would be undertaken soon in Region Two is to ensure that persons are rewarded fairly, once the surveying process would have been completed.
The Minister reiterated that his Ministry is more concerned about a fair process which would allow the complainants to receive what is rightfully theirs. “Be vigilant to protect your own rights.”
The village of Good-Hope was bought by ex-slaves and some persons claimed legal ownership to those lands as a result of ancestral rights. Currently, a number of persons are petitioning through the courts for both residential and agricultural land entitlements.
