A farmer facing an Attempt Murder charge told a city Magistrate on Tuesday that he stabbed his acquaintance who attacked him after he failed to repay a $1000 debt.
Travis Chesney, 39, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was remanded to prison until October 16. He was charged with wounding Wayne Stoll with intent to murder him on August 8, at Friendship, East Bank Demerara.
Though he was not called upon to respond to the indictable charge, Chesney told the court that the incident stemmed from a debt he owed. The accused said that he had sold Stoll “something” for $3000 but Stoll claimed that the article was ‘fake’. He said that he returned $2000 and they agreed for him to repay the remaining $1000 when he received his salary.
“On Thursday I got paid but I came off late and I was too tired. I had a terrible back ache so I didn’t make it to pay him and on Friday he come to me. He wasn’t pleased,” the accused related. Chesney claimed that the man came with a cutlass and started swinging it at him.
The farmer said that Stoll dealt him two lashes and he ducked, but one had caught him on his left hand. He said in the process of defending himself, he had a “piece of something in his hand” which he used to “jook” Stoll.
Chesney told the court that he is unsure where Stoll received the stab wound.
The Prosecution was led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Deneashwar Maindranauth who stated that there are no antecedents recorded for the accused. Though he did not reveal the details of the incident, he told the court that the victim is still hospitalised.
Responding, Magistrate McLennan noted the victim’s condition and remanded Chesney to prison.
