A minibus driver has been charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving, following a crash which claimed the life of a
veteran cyclist on Carifesta Avenue, Georgetown.
Four months after the fatal accident, Sookraj Permaul, 26, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was granted $800,000 bail.
The charge against Permaul detailed that on April 2, last, at Carifesta Avenue, he drove in a manner dangerous to the public while piloting motor bus BNN6492, thereby causing Roy Albert Mendonca’s death.
Permaul was not called upon to respond to the indictable charge.
The case was prosecuted by Police Corporal, Deniro Jones, who did not reveal the details of the accident.
Permaul’s lawyer, Omeyana Hamilton asked that he be released on reasonable bail. It was met with no objections from the Prosecution thus the Magistrate set bail to the tune of $1M.
Hamilton, however, asked for a bail reduction. The request was granted.
The case was adjourned and Permaul is set to face Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 11.
Reports are that Mendonca, who recently received an award for being the top ‘over 60’ rider, was riding west along Carifesta Avenue that morning. The driver, who was travelling east, allegedly attempted to overtake a few vehicles when he allegedly struck Mendonca.
Following the head-on collision with the minibus, the 67-year-old, who resided at Lot 281 Forshaw Street, Queenstown, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver was arrested and a charge was subsequently instituted against him.
