Leewards thump ICC Americas
By Zaheer Mohamed
Trinidad and Tobago defeated Barbados by 58 runs in the sixth round of the Regional Under-19 50-over tournament yesterday at Everest Cricket Club. Consistent bowling by Akil Seetal (3-36), Tevin Jadoo (2-15) and Samuel Roopnarine (2-22) sent the Bajans packing for 146 in 47.4 overs after they were set 205 for victory.
Jeremy Solozano stroked an attractive 56 and Camillo Carimbocas scored 44 to give the Trinis a decent total after they decided to bat. Solozano added 66 for the opening wicket with Amir Jangoo to lay the foundation.
The pair started off watchfully against the new ball duo of Tarik Shorey and Matthew Jones. Solozano grew in confidence and thumped Jones for boundaries, but skipper Joshua Drakes rung the changes in search of the breakthrough and Chad Williams provided it when he had Jangoo taken by Shorey for 26.
Solozano continued to middle the ball well, sharing in a second wicket stand of 58 with Justin Joseph before he fell to Williams for 56; he faced 107 balls and hit two fours. Joseph hammered Neil Persaud and Nicholas Kirton for maximums, but Shamar Springer pulled things back for the Bajans; he trapped Joseph LBW for 38 and uprooted the stumps of Brain Christmas (01) to leave the score at 145-4.
Jones then accounted for Jemeel Manriam (00) before Carimbocas and Brandon Jaggernauth put together 54 for the sixth wicket with level headed batting. Although the Bajans maintained a decent line and length, the duo managed to rotate the strike nicely. Although they both fell to Jones in an effort to increase the scoring rate in the latter stages of the innings their efforts proved a handful. Carimbocas scored 44 while Jaggernauth made 19. Left arm spinner Jones was the pick of the bowlers with 3-43; Williams claimed 2-31 and Springer 2-38.
Off spinner Samuel Roopnarine had Leniko Boucher (01) caught by wicket-keeper Christmas in the first over to give Barbados an early set back. However Kirton and Akil Greenidge steadied the chase with a second wicket stand of 86.
Kirton slapped pacer Akil Seetal to the cover boundary and drove Jesse Bootan for four. The lefthander pulled Christmas to the mid wicket fence, but moved too far across his stumps and was bowled behind his back the very next delivery for 45 (4×4).
Greenidge tucked Roopnarine and Bootan for boundaries before he was taken off Roopnarine for 43. His dismissal triggered a collapse with only Springer of the remaining batsmen showing fight with 16. The impressive Seetal snared 3-36; Jadoo captured 2-15 and Roopnarine 2-22.
At the Guyana National Stadium, Leeward Islands hammered ICC Americas by 150 runs. Leeward Islands posted 259-4 off 50 overs, batting first. Shaquille Martina led with 60; Kacey Carty scored 59, Dion Weste 51 and Ross Powell 34. Delray Rawlings grabbed 3-38.
ICC Americas were bowled out for 109 in 25.2 overs in reply. T. Ross made 21, Farhan Malik 18 and Vibhav Altekar 15. Pacer Alzarri Joseph bagged 5-47 and Jeremiah Louis 2-19.
The competition continues today with Trinidad and Tobago facing Leeward Islands at DCC and Windward Islands playing Jamaica at GCC.
