In an effort to eliminate crime in the Tuschen Housing Scheme on the East Bank of Essequibo (EBE), Commander of ‘D’ Division, Senior Superintendent Ian Amsterdam on Saturday last re-commissioned a police patrol base.
Police ranks along with members from the Community Policing Group (CPG) will be present at the facility on a 24 hour basis to serve the residents of the community.
The patrol base was re-commissioned during a simple ceremony at the site which saw the presence of Commander Amsterdam; Deputy Commander ‘D’ Division, Stephen Mansell; Chairman of the National Community Policing Group, Omesh Satyanand; police officers; members of faith based organizations, along with residents.
According to the Commander, the outpost was commissioned several years ago by then Minister of Home Affairs, Gail Teixeira.
He added that after the launching of C-PETS- (Creating Positive Environments through Safer Communities and Partnership) some 33 days ago, a decision was made to have a rank stationed at the outpost.
C-PETS, the brain child of Commander Amsterdam, is part of a strategic plan for his division to get communities, faith-based organizations, police and residents to build a closer relationship with each other.
Amsterdam explained that the patrol base would see policemen and CPG members patrolling the area on bicycles, motorcycles, and foot during the day while a motor vehicle would be used in the night.
“I am happy that we have moved to another level having launched project C-PETS. We have moved to the next level where we have looked at crime and security and we have decided that Tuschen is going to be our pilot as it relates to the implementation of our partnership programme,” the Commander said.
He added that the community in the past had recorded the highest crime rate in ‘D’ Division but as of last month the figures dropped significantly.
“For last month there has been no serious crimes… two petty robberies were recorded and we are working on making the community a no crime zone,” Amsterdam said.
He added that, “a lot of people came here from all parts of the country and that was a problem we identified because they don’t know each other and they don’t know who they can trust.”
The Commander told this publication that all the stakeholders will work assiduously to ensure that the Tuschen Housing Scheme becomes a crime free community.
He pointed out that the patrol base is located between the Leonora and Parika Police Stations and urged residents to utilize the services offered at the outpost.
