DEAR EDITOR,
The PPP should know that they are fooling only themselves. What they are not interested in is justice and proper governance in Guyana.
When the PPP’s unwillingness to hold Local Government Elections, its abuse of the courts to maintain the status quo, its disregard for Parliament, the wanton misuse and abuse of state resources, and the numberless bills (most probably at Haags Bosch by now) the President has willfully not assented to, is considered, the only rational conclusion that can be drawn is that the PPP has complete disregard for the rule of law, the institutions of State, and the will of the people.
Guyana is right now in a state of oppression, and not the US, the United Nations, NATO or anyone else will help us. This has been a growing problem and the sooner solved the better. The oppressor is young, meaning that we have another 25 to 30 years of oppression under his rule. By then, the country would have become brainwashed (as we seem to be shaping up to be) into accepting oppression as the norm, as happened in North Korea and Russia. In those two countries, as is the case here, there are just a few rich people, with the majority living in oppression. We can curse each other, or we resolve to settle our problems.
I submit that Guyana’s most capable leader right now is David Granger. The happenings at the last Congress were a great disappointment for many. However, upon review, it is difficult to dispute that the events were staged, and that holding another election would probably yield similar or worse results, unless the PNC takes stronger measures to clamp down on the evident hooliganism.
However, this would still be embarrassing from a civilized perspective. The PNC probably needs to review its policy of discipline and criteria for membership. Hooligans and instigators will be hooligans and instigators.
The People’s Progressive Party’s Achilles’ heel is that it fosters rubber stamps for the Presidency, while they (senior functionaries) run the show from behind. They decide who gets what and manage public relations to control the citizens.
A nation that encourages slackness in its government heaps oppression and injustice on itself.
Let us place hope in the electoral process and maintain our democracy.
Craig Sylvester
