An unbroken ninth wicket stand of 40 between Sherman Lewis and Deron Hypolite guided Windward Islands to a hard fought two- wicket victory over Trinidad and Tobago in the fifth round of the Regional U-19 50-over tournament yesterday at Enmore.
Chasing 149, the pair came together with the game evenly balanced at 110-8 and saw their team to safety in the penultimate over with sensible batting. Lewis faced 30 balls and ended unbeaten on 26, while Hypolite finished on 13 off 33 balls.
Roland Cato (24) and Ryan John (29) rescued Windwards with a sixth wicket stand of 64 after they were reduced to 45-5.
Melvin Gordon (07) and Gidron Pope (12) added 22 for the opening stand before off spinner Samuel Roopnarine uprooted the stumps of Gordon. Pacer Akil Seetal then bowled Pope one run later while Anderson Phillip sent back Tonis Simon (01) to leave Windwards in trouble at 28-3. Kershaskie Jno Lewis (04) played back to the steady Roopnarine and lost his stumps who also accounted for Anson Latchman (04). But Cato and John steadied the chase with levelheaded batting. The pair fought bravely especially Roopnarine and Seetal. Cato took advantage of Roopnarine over-pitched deliveries hitting him for a couple of boundaries while John also drove Seetal for a few when he pitched wayward.
However it was Seetal that brought his team back into the contest, he removed both Cato and John within a run of each other leaving the score at 110-7. Justin Joseph trapped Doran Edwards (01) LBW before Lewis and Hypolite took the game away from the Trinis. Seetal ended with 3-31 from eight overs and Ropnarine 3-36 from 10.
Earlier Jeremy Solozano and Justin Joseph gave Trinidad and Tobago a rousing start with a stand of 41 after they were asked to bat on a pitch with some assistance for the bowlers. Joseph was the first to go bowled by Hypolite for 13. The watchful Solozano struck one four before he was taken off Pope for 28 which came off 56 balls.
The Trinis then suffered a collapse which saw six wickets falling for 44 runs.
Amir Gangoo was LBW to Pope for 02; Keron Kanhai was dismissed in similar fashion to Edward for 01 leaving the score at 62-4. Camillo Carimbocas and Jemeel Maniram tried to repair the damage with a fifth wicket stand of 19, but Lewis ended their resistance when he bowled Maniram for 13. Brandon Jaggernauth (00), Roopnarine (06) and Carimbocas (15) soon followed before Phillip (17) and Tevin Jadoo put some respectability to the total with a ninth wicket stand of 33. Following the demise of Phillip, Jadoo added a further 20 for the last wicket with Seetal, but had their efforts should have been more ably supported by the top order. Jadoo scored 21 not out (1×4) and Seetal an unbeaten 11. Pope was the pick of the bowlers with 4-23 from 10 overs while Lewis had 2-33 off eight.
Meanwhile, the game between the ICC Americas and Barbados was rained out at Demerara Cricket Club. ICC Americas were 55-4 after 26.3 overs, batting first. Abraash Khan had so far top scored with 23. Tarik Shorey and Neil Persaud picked up one wicket each. Both teams collected two points.
