– suspect seen scaling back fence
Slain Plaisance resident Ann Mendonca was apparently bound, gagged and tortured to open a safe in her home, and police are looking for an individual who was reportedly seen leaving the premises.
Mendonca, 57, was found dead in her bed at around 21.00 hrs on Saturday. Her hands were bound with duct-tape and a plastic bag was tied over her head. Two pillows were also placed on her face.
Police believe that Ms. Mendonca was slain around midday on Friday by someone who entered her open back door while she was cooking. It is believed that the intruder then tied his victim up and began to beat her with a metal bar to force her to give him the combination for a safe in the house.
“Her face was swollen; the back of her head was also swollen. We believe that she was beaten (in the face) while the two pillows were on her head,” a source said.
Investigators suspect that she eventually suffocated.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman did not know the combination for the safe, which also did not have much of value inside.
The killer apparently made off with a gold chain and two rings belonging to Mrs. Mendonca’s son, George Mendonca, as well as a DVD player, three tool sets and a computer hard-drive.
Police have received reports that a known character was seen leaving the victim’s premises via the back fence. He is yet to be detained. Police have also questioned several other residents, including a man with whom Ms. Mendonca is said to have had a recent dispute.
A tearful George Mendonca said that he last saw his mother alive at around 06.30 hrs on Friday, when he left for work. Mr. Mendonca said that he returned home at around 21.00 hrs and found all the lights off, while the back door was ajar.
“I put on the lights and called for her and then went into the bedroom and found her with duct-tape on her hands and two pillows on her face. I rushed outside and called neighbours and the police came. “
George Mendonca, the victim’s only child, described his mother as someone who looked out for her family.
“I’m still shocked. That’s not the way that my mother was supposed to go.”
Police have recorded 80 murders within the past seven months of the year and many of these cases remain unsolved.
