Police are to place two men on identification parade to ascertain whether they are involved in the recent spate of attacks against travelers heading to and from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
A senior police official said yesterday that the suspects were taken into custody this week and Kaieteur News understands that investigators have received word that one of them was involved in last week Saturday’s abduction of private school teacher Latchmin Gopaul and her husband, Lekraj Gopaul.
Kaieteur News was told that the suspects’ “name was mentioned” in several recent robberies, including last week Wednesday’s attack on Pastor Sewnauth Poonalall of the Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church, who was gun-butted and robbed shortly after returning from the airport with some overseas guests.
Mrs. Gopaul, her husband, Lekraj Gopaul, and taxi driver Parmanand Teekaram were abducted at gunpoint near Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, by two men dressed in police uniforms.
They were driven to a desolate spot at Yarrowkabra, off the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, where they were bound and relieved of millions in local and foreign currency, jewelry and other valuables.
Police have since set up round the clock patrols to protect travelers heading to and from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
