DEAR EDITOR,
The population must now act smarter. I am reading of the ruse pulled off by two bandits, dressed as police officers. These two had a good haul, and I am left to wonder why the general citizenry of Guyana do not operate with some simple common sense.
At a personal level, I never walk around with plenty of money and I do not wear jewellery. As a matter of fact, the crime culture of Guyana does not allow for any kind of flaunting of even simple jewellery or expensive cell phones. As for our houses here, the crime culture dictates that we must build with great attention to safety measures, namely steel bars. We may soon hear of people building with electrocution devices, since there is the urgent need to deal with invaders.
The point I want to make is that people are very vulnerable in Guyana. Response to crime is very slow and investigations are seldom detailed. This again spells out what we must do if we are going to safeguard ourselves.
We must only travel to and from Timehri during the day; it will be better to stay there before and after flight times. If this changes the landscape, so be it. Here we have a hard-working couple suffering, all because we have a lack of fear, where criminal activities are concerned.
According to the report, a 59-year-old man, was relieved of US$14,000, 400 pounds Sterling, a watch valued at $180,000, a gold chain valued at $180,000, a $71,000 watch, a camera worth US$1,200, a ring valued at $70,000 and his spectacles. His wife was relieved of US$4,000, 500 pounds Sterling, $400 Can., a $500,000 gold band and a diamond-encrusted ring worth $300,000. The bandits also relieved the driver of $60,000 and a cell phone before reportedly escaping in a blue car.
Last week, one businessman decided to pack-up and leave, after repeated robberies. This ‘pack-up’ thing is really the mind-set of many, many Guyanese. The ones staying are those who have no option of leaving. Outside of this group, the ones who are opportunistically placed will stay until they too become vulnerable or they lose their privileges (political or otherwise). Then we have the many, who are biding their time, as they have already been sponsored.
