– Granted $300,000 bail
The man who was behind the wheel of the motor car that killed a West Coast Berbice man on Sunday and seriously injured
another has been charged.
Iqual Laceman, 36, of Lot 65 Public Road Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, an overseas based Guyanese, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court yesterday on the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
The man is accused of causing the death of Eson Ritch, 39, of Lot 50 Cemetery Road, Hopetown, West Coast Berbice.
According to information, the accident occurred about 19:35hrs, on the Main Road at No. 11 Village, West Coast Berbice. Reports are that Ritch was driving motor cycle CF 9968 with pillion rider Clifford Mc Calmon, 23 years, of Lichfield, WCB in tow. Laceman, who was driving motor car PKK 7500 owned by one Henry Ramjeet of No 2 Village, East Canje Berbice, allegedly drove out from an access road and collided with the motor bike which resulted in both Ritch and Mc Calmon falling and receiving injuries to their heads and other parts of their bodies.
The men were picked up and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital where Ritch died while receiving treatment. Mc Calmon was transferred to the Georgetown Hospital for further treatment.
In court yesterday, Attorney at Law Mursalene Bacchus applied for bail, citing his client’s intention of remaining in Guyana. He noted that Laceman has no intention of fleeing the country since he has applied for land to open a business entity.
Prosecutor, Sergeant Godfrey Playter asked that bail be refused on the grounds that the accused is a flight risk. He pointed out that the accused is a Canadian citizen and may flee the country. However, the Magistrate placed the accused on $300,000 bail and ordered that his passport be lodged with the court.
The matter has been transferred to the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s court for continuation on August 21.
