…Research institute launched in his honour
Members of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) gathered yesterday to commemorate the 29th death anniversary of the nation’s first Executive President, Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham.
The event which was held at the National Congress of Women (NCW) Headquarters, Lot 44 Public Road, Kitty, also marked the official launch of the Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham Research Institute.
The ceremony included musical tributes, cultural dances and the laying of floral wreaths at the bust of LFS Burnham
Speaking at the ceremony was veteran PNC/R member Jeffrey Thomas, who urged the Party to return to its original code of ethics.
“Of late, I have seen the PNCR Members of Parliament behave in manners which have undermined the credibility of the Party. Behaviour that would have been inconceivable in any Party led by Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham… I believe that we should no longer take note of our leader’s ideas but implement them,” Thomas said.
He said that the launch of the institute is parallel to ensuring adequate scrutiny of Burnham’s legacy.
The LFS Burnham Research Institute will be temporarily housed at the NCW Headquarters. The institute is aimed at providing material for research, relevant to the development of the Party.
“It is appropriate for the Party to build such an institute to preserve the vision of Burnham, recognize his approach and efforts towards the development of Guyana and explore the options necessary to solving problems of the nation.”
“The objective is to collaborate with similar institutions to provide research material to Guyana, Caribbean and the rest of the world.”
Thomas also noted that the institute will contribute towards the development of young people.
“The curriculum and work of the Research Institute must be towards the development of the leadership skills among the young people, so that they can boldly represent the Party in philosophy and politics it embraces. The institute will also provide the party with a plan to nurture skills and intellect capabilities relative to resolving conflict.”
Party leader, Brigadier David Granger expressed commitment to making the nation’s motto of “One People One Nation and One Destiny,” a reality.
He said that the founder leader started the process of national unification by “erasing the disparities, inequalities and by eliminating human vulnerabilities.”
“We are committed to making Guyana one nation. Forbes Burnham made a contract with this country 50 years ago…we the executives of that contract have an obligation to continue his work to make Guyana one nation.”
Granger also noted that the realization of the institute will aid in the process of preserving Burnham’s legacy.
“Forbes Burnham made significant contribution to Guyana’s process of modernization and we need to let the present generation know about it. We feel that the study of his legacy will contribute to building Guyana into the unified nation that Burnham had envisioned”
