The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the death of the 40-year-old Kaneville, East Bank Demerara resident Jairam Teekaram, whose body was found in a clump of bushes with the head almost severed, has commenced.
A total of eight witnesses have so far testified on the State’s behalf.
The dead man’s brother, Rohan Teekaram also known as ‘Janko’, 42, is accused of murdering him at his residence sometime between April 20 and 22, last.
Reports are that the siblings had an argument during which the accused reportedly chopped Jairam to death with a cutlass, and then hid his body.
The bloodied body of the 40-year-old with the head almost severed was reportedly discovered around 08:00hrs on April 22, last by a neighbour. It was found under a piece of carpet hidden away in the bushes at the side of his home.
Three days after the discovery, Rohan was taken before Chief Magistrate Sewnarine-Beharry to face the murder charge. He is unrepresented by legal counsel and the case is being prosecuted by Inspector Michael Grant.
At yesterday’s hearing, Naithram Teekaram, son of the deceased, another relative, Jasodra Teekaram as well as several neighbours and family friends were called to testify.
These included Hemwattie Latchman, Komal Gopaul, Mohammed Afeez, Wellington DaCosta and Glenn Baptiste.
The PI is scheduled to continue today in the said courtroom.
