The man held in connection with the stabbing to death of a minibus driver was yesterday brought before a senior city Magistrate.
Six days after the incident, Orin Jerrick of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court arraigned on a murder charge.
Before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Jerrick heard that he murdered Gavin Fiffee of 93 Sideline Dam, Beterverwagting, on July 31 in Georgetown. He was not required to plead to the charge.
After the brief hearing before the Chief Magistrate, Jerrick was remanded to prison and the case was transferred to Magistrate Judy Latchman for report and fixtures.
Jerrick appeared before the court with a bandage on his left hand, and his Attorney, Pamela DeSantos requested a court order for him to seek medical attention since he had been severely wounded in the incident.
Magistrate Latchman endorsed DeSantos’ request and the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) was set to commence on August 22.
The case is being prosecuted by Prosecutor, Sergeant Vishnu Hunt who is expected to bring several witnesses to prove their case against Jerrick.
According to reports, Fiffee, a father of two, was loading his minibus at the Plaisance bus park on Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic, when Jerrick began urinating on the wheel of the vehicle.
Fiffee confronted him and an argument ensued. Jerrick reportedly stabbed him to the upper right chest. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) by a public spirited citizen, where he later succumbed.
Following investigations into the incident, the accused, who had been evading capture for a few days, turned himself over to the police on August 2.
