Dear Editor,
The authorities in Guyana need to revisit their policies in attracting foreign visitors who arrive at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on business or vacation with regards to driving permits
I arrived into Timehri via BW425 on Saturday last( 26th July) at 830am.
After clearing the Immigration formalities I proceeded to the GRA cashier to obtain a driving permit based on my foreign licence. The young man behind the desk was eating at the time and bluntly stated that he had no permits to issue.
He indicated that I should go to Georgetown to the Licence Office (which would have been closed) to obtain one. I explained that I had a rental car waiting for me to pick up at the airport. His reply was that I should take a taxi and then he continued eating.
The Government will soon be holding the Guyana Festival and one wonders if the Authorities are really serious about attracting foreign business men/women and tourist with this attitude.
In many foreign countries, all that is required is to have your local licence and in some cases your return ticket with you when driving. Why can’t Guyana adopt those procedures.
