Dexter Carr, who was grazed by a bullet when a lone gunman opened fire on the female passenger who was sitting next to him in a mini bus, claimed that the shooter followed his victim all the way from the city bus park.
Bernadette Campbell, 40, was sitting in the front seat of a mini bus when she was shot in her stomach at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD) around 20:00 hrs last Tuesday.
The shooter escaped with her jewellry.
She is still a patient in the Georgetown Public Hospital corporation (GPHC)’s High Dependency Unit (HDU). Carr who had sustained minor injury was treated and sent away.
A relative of the injured woman said yesterday that she was in a stable condition. He refused to divulge further information but stated that Campbell did not recognize her shooter.
Carr, in an interview with this newspaper yesterday said that it was after the mini bus stopped at Plaisance, waiting on passengers to travel back to the city, the shooter approached them and opened fire.
“I was visiting a friend so when I entered the bus I told the conductor where I was coming off because I am not familiar with the area but after a while I realized he (conductor) forget about me so I asked him and he said that he forget everything and that when the bus turn around back, he will drop me off,” Carr said.
He added that when the bus reached at the back of Plaisance, it was him and Campbell alone while the conductor was touting passengers and the driver was walking around.
“The driver came out of the bus and the lady (Campbell) jammed me and said that the driver said someone followed her from Georgetown and that he (driver) was going out to see. She tell me it was some guy in a ‘hoodie’, so I looked around and I see a guy in a white ‘hoodie’ and I asked her if it was him and she said ‘yes’,” Carr recalled.
He added that the man in the ‘hoodie’ approached them and demanded that they exit the bus after which he discharged two rounds.
“After he shoot, his gun like it stick and that was when I open the door and run through a street…. I could’a still hear more gunshots going off. After a while when I average like it finished, I walked out back and catch a bus and went to the hospital,” Carr related.
No one has been arrested as yet.
