Guyana reclaimed the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) Athletics title they lost to Suriname last year, against dominant performances in the sprint and middle distance events, with Natricia Hooper the lone Guyanese athlete to win two field events.
CHAMPS AGAIN! The victorious Junior National Athletics Team celebrates in a photo moment at the GDF Ground yesterday after reclaiming the IGG title from Suriname.
Guyana amassed a total of 333 points, as opposed to Suriname’s 295, to come away with the win. French Guiana did not compete in track and field in the 2014 IGG in Guyana. Therefore, the athletics competition was a straight fight between Guyana and Suriname.
Avon Samuels continued a sprint double when she won the Girls’ 200m in 24.9 seconds ahead of Jevina Sampson (25.20) and Suriname’s Carine Pavion who ran 26.40 seconds. Samuels had also won the 400m race on day one of the event at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Ground.
Tevin Garraway avenged his controversial 100m loss the day before with a commanding 200m in the Boys’ race. He ran 21.40 seconds to beat Kevin Abbensetts, who ran 21.50 and Suriname’s Romario Pansa (22.10).
Ornesto Thomas finished with a double in the middle distance events when he also won the 800m after his 1500m win on day one. Thomas won in 2:00.70 from Suriname’s Uracio Seedorf (2:01.50) and Miquel Shepper (2:10.90) respectively.
Andrea Foster delivered the Girls’ 800m race for Guyana in 2:21.80 with team-mate, Shontel Hinds second in 2:35.90. Suriname’s Davinia Asantiba (2:45.60) was third. Cassey George then doubled up after winning the 3000m event.
George won in 10:58.50 after winning the 1500m the day before. Team-mate, Claudrice McKoy was second in 11:19 while Suriname’s Amania Esmeralda (12:07.60) was third. In the Boys’ 5000m, Grivon Grant won in 17:30.50 with team-mate, Mathew McKenzie second in 18:01.00 and Suriname’s, Gilberto Aloeboetoe (18:40.30) third.
Guyana won both the male and female 4x400m races, but lost some ground in the field events owed to Suriname winning the male Shot Put and Javelin, female Javelin and Shot Put and male and female Long Jump events.
