Dear Editor,
Please permit me space in your letter column so I can bring attention to what goes on in our community at Charity, on the Essequibo Coast with regards to noise nuisance and the non-cooperation of the police at Charity, Essequibo Coast.
Complaint after complaint to the police, followed by several statements requesting court proceedings seem futile, since no action is taken to alleviate this scourge in our surroundings. In a recent report to a senior police officer, who visited my home along with a policewoman to ascertain the medical condition of my sick wife which this very loud noise had made her to be in this condition.
Editor, I was shocked to the limit when the said senior officer had told me that if he was the owner of a disco and he had to play loud music to attract customers and make money he would play the music loud and would not care or be concerned whom it may disturb, once he makes money.
He also said that I should move away my wife from our home and take her to a place where she cannot be disturbed. Editor, I was shocked to hear these words coming from the mouth of this officer who is supposed to be a police sergeant and someone who should know that residents have a constitutional right to enjoy the peace and comfort of their surroundings.
The comment made by this officer leaves me aghast, since he had sworn to the constitution of Guyana to serve and protect and uphold law and order. I tried in vain to explain my position and those of other residents who are seriously affected, but the rank stoutly defended the perpetrators saying the police cannot determine who the persons are that were playing the music loudly, although I pointed out to them and called the names of the persons concerned.
On Mondays, especially after the adjournment of the Magistrate Court and Monday and holidays, I have to keep all my windows and doors tightly closed to keep out a small percentage of this noise in order to avoid further serious illness. The following day I have to take my wife to the hospital for doctors’ attention.
Editor, we are now prisoners in our own home. The source of this nuisance is a disco next door to my home and the place is not soundproof and huge sound boxes are placed into an open area which causes heavy vibrations. This matter has been reported in the past to the Commissioner of Police, the chairman of the Police Complaints Authority, the Minister of Home Affairs, the Office of Professional Responsibility and the Environmental Protection Agency. It is my opinion that we are being given a royal run around by the relevant authorities.
