Guyana’s bid to break the jinx of not winning the Inter Guiana Games swimming title will continue for another year with their old nemesis, Suriname once again taking the championships title yesterday when the 2-day competition concluded at the National Aquatic Centre.
The Surinamese (109) who led French Guiana after the first day by 8 points maintained that lead to win overall by a similar margin, totaling 208 points to French Guiana (200) and the host team with 146 points.
French Guiana won the Girls Team competition accumulating 97 points to Suriname’s 95 and Guyana’s 84. The Dutch team turned the tables in the Boys Team competition winning with 113 points to The French’s 103 and the English speaking hosts on 62.
The Guyanese female swimmers continued to lead the way on yesterday’s final day, led by Britany van Lange who powered to 2 gold medals in the 200m Freestyle (2:21.33) and the 100m Freestyle (1:01.36) in both races, van Lange bettered her seed times.
Soroya Simmons was a silver medalist in the 50m Backstroke (34.59) trailing Suriname’s Anjali Rahan who took gold in 33.71, Accalia Khan was the bronze medalist ((35.03). Jamila Sanmoogan took bronze in the 100m Breaststroke (1:34.34).
The girl’s quartet (Sanmoogan, Simmons, Accalia Khan, van Lange) ended the meet in style with silver in the 50m Freestyle Relay (1:59.30), the Guyanese easing their way back on the third leg after being behind the winners, Suriname (1:58.68) and French Guiana (2:02.80).
Omar Adams swam to silver in the boys 200m Freestyle clocking 2:14.42, Yael Touw Ngie Tjouw of Suriname won gold in 2:06.59 with French Guiana’s Joris Tarcy taking the bronze (2:15.81). Hannibal Gaskin copped bronze in the 100m Freestyle (57.71), Christophe Lot (55.26) of French Guiana took the gold medal with Juan Limburg (57.11) of Suriname taking the silver. Bronze for the boys also came in the final competition event, 50m Freestyle Relay clocking; Gaskin, Joseph De Nobrega, Omar Adams and Selwyn Miller clocked 1:49.00. Suriname underlined their dominance at this level with victory with gold compliments of Rochyl Chan, Touw Ngie, Jordi Chan and Juan Limburg stopping the click at 1:42.39.
French Guiana’s Jean-Guy Delices, Jean-Marc William, Warren Mayern and Lot (1:44.10) got silver.
Points were awarded to the top 5 places in the individual events as follows; 1st (7), 2nd (5), 3rd (4), 4th (3), 5th (2). For the relays; 1st (14), 2nd (10), 3rd (8). (Franklin Wilson)
