– shot handyman recounts attack by gunman
Anderson Garrett, 30, is set to undergo surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), to remove a bullet lodged in his neck. He was admitted there after he sustained a gunshot from an armed bandit in Sophia, on Friday.
After a scramble with the lone gunman, Garrett was shot in the head. The bullet travelled to the lower region of his neck and lodged there. He is now in a stable condition at the hospital.
Garrett related to this publication the series of events leading to his “near death experience.”
Some may question his retaliation but Garrett who had $120 and a cheap cellular phone in his pocket said, “He was not going to die without a fight.”
According to Garrett, “I never came so close to death; I knew that if I surrendered what I had, he still would have shot me because that’s how they operating…so I was not going to die down without a fight.”
The handyman, who is employed at the Cool Square Bar in West Ruimveldt, said that at 20:15 hrs on Emancipation Day, he was on his way to ‘D’ Field Sophia to visit his mother, when the gunman jumped out of a nearby bush on the route and yelled “freeze!”
Garrett said that when the bandit demanded his possessions, he immediately began throwing punches at the man in an effort to disarm and disable him. He related that his punches were enough to temporarily disarm the bandit, because the gun fell on the ground.
Garrett said that the bandit gained an upper hand when he, Garrett, slipped and fell to the ground during their scramble. This gave the bandit ample time to retrieve his gun and discharge a round to Garrett’s temple.
After he was shot, Garrett said the gunman immediately fled the scene empty handed.
Remaining conscious after his bullet wound, Garrett ran to a nearby house in the area, where he was helped by public spirited citizens.
Garrett said that he was taken to the hospital by ranks of the Turkeyen Police Station, who quickly responded.
