…fetes elderly citizens in East Canje
By Samuel Whyte
The ‘B’ Division police led by Assistant Commissioner and Commander Brian Joseph, continues to provide new initiatives in the quest to do things differently and bridge the gap between the community and the Police force.
Commander Joseph was assisted by Second in Command, Senior Superintendent Marlon Chapman. The police, who recently formed a Youth Club in the Lower East Canje area on Saturday, teamed up with the East Canje Humanitarian Council to bring joy to a number of elderly citizens in the East Canje area. The activity was held at the Goed Bananen Land Community Centre, East Canje Berbice.
There were 10 senior citizens who had a combined age of over 900 years. They were recognized and treated by the two organizations for their long and continuous service to the community of East Canje, Berbice, Guyana. One of the recipients was a retired World War veteran while another was a centenarian.
The centenarian, Phulkalie Benni, is from Number Two Village; the War veteran is 95-year-old James Daniels of Goed Bananen Land. Rachel Michael, 95, of Betsy Ground; Harold Bisssoon, 94, of Goed Bananen Land; Mangru Seeperasud, 94, of Canefield; Alma Victor, 93, of Goed Bananen Land; Myra Grant, 88, of Canefield; Sukhdya Ramdehol, 86, of Betsy Ground; Surujdai Tullakarnum, 86, of Canefield and Gladys Sancharie, 80, of Reliance were the other senior citizens.
They were all presented with a hamper that included nutrients and other delicacies which are mostly consumed and needed by the elderly folks.
Speaking at the ceremony was Officer in Charge of Number One Sub Division, Assistant Superintendent Guy Nurse, who congratulated the folks for their longevity and wished them well in the future. He stated that the police are not only about locking up persons, solving crimes, making cases and going after criminals. They are also about looking after people’s welfare.
The recent formation of the Youth Group and the present event are two activities where the police are otherwise involved.
He asked them to share some of their tips on longevity with the younger generation. Also speaking was Chief Inspector Gregory Springer, who has responsibility for the East Canje area and Corporal Randy Hamilton, Officer-in-charge of the Reliance Police station.
The police have pledged to continue working with other organizations to help not only the elderly, but also the youths and the not so fortunate
The senior police officers were heartened by the response of elderly residents. One resident stated that it was the best gift she has received for the year.
