Guyana beat French Guiana in IGG basketball showdown
– hunts first male title in seven years

to bounce away with an impressive win that reeked of maturity and signaled an intention of winning the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) male title they last won in 2007 at the same venue.
Guyana overcame French Guiana 79-68 with Shaffeq Thomas literally lighting up the sometimes dark arena from ‘downtown’ with 17 points that included five three-point jumpers. Terron Welch had 14 points in a complete team effort.
The Guyanese shot an amazing 42 percent from three-point range with Nathan Saul and Stanton Rose getting in on the pie for 33 points of their final score. Rose had eight points while Saul had nine points to support Guyana’s effort at reclaiming history.
Saul drilled a crucial jumper from beyond the arc to put Guyana up 65-59 with 6:10 to play in the final quarter. Thomas then ignited the small but vocal crowd at the venue with a huge three-point jumper after a crossover that freed him up.
Thomas then continued his offensive leadership role with another three-point jumper that placed his team in the seventies on course to beating the Cayenne team. Guyana led 16-15 after the first quarter before taking another 36-34 advantage at halftime.
Under a serious offensive attack from French Guiana, with the pick-and-roll the centre of attack, Guyana managed to hold on to a 59-55 lead at the end of third quarter owed to its phenomenal shooting that kept them ahead.
Yaan Monde had 21 points for French Guiana while Lookhan Zephirin-Henry scored 10 points to support the visitors. Dylan Aboulle and Brandon Thomas had nine points each also for French Guiana in the first male basketball contest of IGG 2014.
Meanwhile, in the women’s basketball contest, French Guiana beat Suriname 62-41 with Catherina Desir scoring 17 points and Elyne Cretus 10 points for French Guiana. Janine Juart had 11 points for Suriname.
