An East Canje woman who is well known to the authorities and is before the court on a number of charges, including attempted murder and unlawful wounding, has been sentenced to six months in jail on an unlawful wounding charge, in which she injured her former lover.
Gem Rosamund Cadogan, 47, a mother of three, of Lot 18 Adelphi Village, East Canje Berbice, reappeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver. She pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawfully wounding George David called ‘John’ of Goed Bananen Land, East Canje Berbice, with intent to cause him actual bodily harm.
Cadogan is accused of wounding David, her former lover, with a piece of wood on his head, on April 13, last, at Adelphi Village, East Canje Berbice, following a misunderstanding between the two. She had initially pleaded not guilty, but changed her plea on Wednesday and was sentenced to six months in jail by Magistrate Weaver.
In another matter, Cadogan had appeared before Magistrate Shurdel Marcus at the same court and was placed on $150,000 bail on an attempted murder charge. She is accused of unlawfully and maliciously wounding David Hoyte called ‘Tate’ a pensioner with intent to commit murder. The incident is said to have occurred on Saturday June 7, 2014, at Goed Bananen Land.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter, on the day in question the victim was in company with others consuming alcohol at a rum shop when the accused, who was also under the influence of alcohol, came into the shop. There was an altercation and Cadogan was put out of the shop.
The woman allegedly became annoyed and picked up a bottle, broke it and stabbed Hoyte to the neck. The man collapsed and was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was treated before being transferred to the Georgetown Hospital for further intervention.
The woman subsequently confessed to the crime. She told investigators that on the day in question she went to the shop where she was drinking Guinness. She stated that the victim was also there drinking rum with some friends. She said that an argument ensued and Hoyte pushed her out of the shop.
“Ah get vex and broke a Guinness bottle and bore he on he neck. Ah see blood and went away. Ah sorry bad fuh what happen.”
Cadogan appeared in the Reliance Magistrate Court on Wednesday before Magistrate Weaver on that matter, which will continue on September 10.
