The management of the Berbice Anjuman Orphanage, Philadelphia Street, New
Amsterdam made a substantial donation to Under-16 amateur boxer Jamal Eastman, who is scheduled to participate in the Guyana Boxing Association Card at the Six Head Gym, tomorrow.
Eastman, a 5th form student of Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) is the nephew of former world rated boxer and national champion Howard “Battersea Bomber’ Eastman. He is the youngest of three brothers who are plying their trade in the boxing ring. The others being Richard Williamson and Joel Williamson.
He has been boxing since the age of 8, following his older siblings to camps. Presently one of Guyana’s brightest prospects, Eastman competes in the Junior Flyweight class. Tomorrow’s event will also showcase boxers from Suriname.
A member of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym in New Amsterdam, Eastman and his siblings have to travel more than 20 miles on a daily basis to Rose Hall Town to keep in shape.
Owner of the Orphanage Brother Abu Bakker Mandal, an overseas based Canadian citizen, in handing over their contribution stated that the Orphanage has been in existence for over 25 years. He said that during the time the Orphanage has taken care of hundreds of youths of different persuasions.
Many have gone on to excel in different fields including education and sports. He promised to continue to assist Eastman and to fully sponsor him. His brother, Canadian based Raymond Rahim who was also present urged Eastman to continue his good showing and to aim for the stars.
He urged him not to let up on his education and be a good ambassador for himself, the Orphanage, his family and the entire country.
Eastman expressed gratitude for the support of the Orphanage and vowed to continue his climb while being a good ambassador.
