Robert Thornhill, a Miami-based philanthropist, through Global Friendships Foundation,
made a donation of a quantity of racquets, balls and other equipment to Lawn Tennis Coach, Shelly Daly Ramdyhan yesterday at the National Park Facility.
The Global Friendships Foundation is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network, which creates and strengthens partnerships, between Georgetown and other cities, and communities internationally. Georgetown Mayor, Hamilton Green is Chairman of the Foundation.
“I just want to offer my congratulations… in Guyana I believe that sport and culture can be the catalyst to unite us… I hope that this initiative will encourage the Private Sector and Government to develop more Lawn Tennis Courts,” Green said yesterday.
He said that as a result of the initiative and hard work of Coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan, he hopes to return to the court in a spectator capacity to witness one of the young players participating and winning “some great tournament”.
Daly-Ramdyhan revealed that Wayne Orderson, who is also part of the Foundation, mobilised to have the contribution facilitated through donations from Thornhill. She said that the contribution will help her continue to develop the sport in Guyana.
“We got a lot of responses (when we asked for donations in Miami); people asked for stuff and it never get to where it goes so we want to continue this in another six months we will continue this effort,” Thornhill said at the simple presentation ceremony.
“We are talking to a lot more people to get items; tennis is a beautiful sport and it’s a non-contact sport. Let’s keep it focused and keep the spirit of the game high,” he noted. Thornhill is a Miami-based philanthropist and entrepreneur, who teaches Lawn Tennis part-time.
