A fine century by skipper Roland Cato prevented Windward Islands from being bowled out for a below par total against Jamaica on the opening day of their third round game in the Regional U-19 3-Day tournament yesterday at the Guyana
National Stadium.
Cato strolled to the middle with Windwards on 66-3 after they were inserted by the Jamaicans and stroked 127 to push his team to 252 before they were bowled out in 94.3 overs in the final session. Melvin Gordon (27) and Gidron Pope (32) added 55 for the opening stand before they were both removed Ramaal Lewis, leaving the score at 62-2.
Lewis continued to make inroads with the wickets of Tonis Simon (12) and Sherman Hooper (00) reducing the Windward Islands to 86-4 however Cato and Anson Latchman resurrected the innings somewhat with a fourth stand of 44 before Latchman was run out for 16. But Cato rallied his team to a respectable total as he stood firm with the lower order. He was eventually stumped by Romaine Morris off Lewis. Ryan John chipped in with 17 as Lewis finished with 7-57 off 32.3 overs. Odean Smith and Nicholas Walters supported with one each.
Leroy Lugg (04*) and Odaine Mc Catty (00*) saw Jamaica to the close on five with lost off three overs. Jamaica have so far taken 2.1 points from the fixture and Windward Islands 2.
