Newly formed female football club of Linden – Demerara Queens FC won their first competitive game when the edged out the Little DIVA Flames FC of Georgetown on Sat 19th July 2014 by 2 goals to 1.
Playing at the sandy Bayrock Gd, Wismar, the home team used the home advantage to the fullest with some well timed runs that had the local fans screaming and shouting with excitement. Meanwhile, Little DIVA Flames whose players looked more technically equipped than their opponents could not cope with the sandy terrain and at times they were exhausted after a run towards the goal.
At half time the score was nil all with both teams squandering opportunities. On the resumption Demerara Queens scored in the 3rd min of the second half with Sherlyn Kingston taking the ball on the left flank and eluded Shania Riley tackle and headed to goal, Jennel Brown came to intercept but Sherlyn Kingston also evaded her and with only Goalkeeper Alicia Simpson to pass she hit a well placed right foot shot which had goal written all over it – the score read Demerara Queens 1 Little DIVA Flames – 0.
The DIVA Flames however counterattacked and drew a penalty when Abiose Heywood was fouled in the penalty area and Odessa Romeo calmly scored in the 10th min of the second half. The score was one all.
Play continued with both teams entertaining with their dribbling skills and sometimes unorthodox style of play. The DIVA’s were showing signs of tiredness whilst the Demerara Queens were enjoying the sand. With 2 minutes to go in the 58th min, Sherlyn Kingston made another run and scored with a long range shot that beat Alicia Simpson convincingly. Final Score Queens 2, DIVA’s 1.
Meanwhile, the return game is set for tomorrow Friday 1st August 2014 at the GFC Ground commencing at 14:00 hrs.
