A Matthews Ridge porkknocker appeared in the city court yesterday charged for burglary. He is accused of carting off over $1M in raw gold, electronic gadgets, jewellery and other valuables from two hotel rooms in the interior, last week.
Two charges of break and enter and larceny were leveled against 28-year-old Kevin Giles. Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry read the accusations to the defendant at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Giles allegedly broke into the Comfort Inn Hotel, Restaurant and Bar at Matthew’s Ridge, and removed items valued at $941,500 from the owner Sherlock Harka, and $165,000 in items from Golding Solomon, one of the hotel’s guests.
The crime was allegedly committed last Thursday (July 24).
Giles pleaded not guilty to both charges and submitted a bail application through his lawyer, Paul Fung-a-Fat.
The case was prosecuted by Police Inspector Michael Grant who did not reveal the details of the crime.
In his request for reasonable bail, Fung-a-Fat stated that his client has no previous conviction but was once brought before the courts, and that matter was dropped. He said that his client has no passport or other travel documents and is willing to subject himself to conditions if deemed necessary by the court.
His application was met with no objections from the Prosecution, but the court was asked to take into consideration the value of the articles if bail was to be granted.
The Chief Magistrate granted Giles bail to the tune of $250,000 for the charge involving the hotelier and $100,000 for the guest. She ordered that the accused report to Detective Constable Garraway or any subordinate officer-in-charge at the Matthew’s Ridge Police Station every Friday at 08:00 hours.
Giles’s case was transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates’ Court and is set to be called before Magistrate Allan Wilson on August 4.
