Leeward Islands defeated Jamaica by two wickets in the second round game of the Regional U-19 3-Day tournament yesterday at Demerara Cricket Club. Set 102 for victory with over a session to go, Leewards almost made a muddle of the chase, but achieved victory just after lunch for the loss of eight wickets as they finished on 107 in 37.3 overs.
Earlier the Jamaicans, trailing by six resumed the day on 97-8 and were sent packing for 107 in 37 overs 29 minutes into the first session. Leroy Lugg was the first to go caught off Jeremiah Louis for five with only nine runs added to the total before pacer Alzarri Joseph had Ryon Burnette caught at the wicket for 17. Joseph ended with 5-17, Shaquille Martina 2-6 and Louis 2-28. Ross Powell and Saeed Williams set their team on course with a first wicket stand of 43. Williams drove pacer Odean Smith for consecutive fours while Powell who played with maturity pulled him over square leg for six and hoisted leg spinner Abijai Mansingh for maximums. Burnette got the breakthrough when he had Williams caught at long on for 15.
The Jamaicans launched a fight back; their consistent bowling and sharp fielding paid off as wickets fell at regular intervals. Burnette removed Kacey Carty (01) two runs later. Powell then featured in a 22-run third wicket stand with Shaquille Martina before he was needlessly run out for 38 (2×4,2×6). Dion Weste missed a delivery outside off stump from Smith, but keeper Romain Morris direct hit from yards back found him short of his ground with the score at 68-4. Martina hit Mansingh down the ground for four, but the spinner continued to loop the ball and soon got his reward when the batsman was caught in the slips for 12 at 84-5. The contest seemed in the balance, Jaleel Clarke (00) was run out and Joseph (00) was sent back by Mansingh without addition to the total. However skipper Louis held his nerves to see his team home. He mixed aggression with defense and smashed Mansingh for a four and a six before Colin Archibald (00) was bowled by Lewis, five shy of victory. Louis gathered a few singles before he deposited Mansingh out of the ground to seal the game.
Burnette was the pick of the bowlers with 2-13 while Mansingh had 2-30. Leewards grasped 17.3 points while Jamaica took 4.3.
