The annual Noble House Goals Galore Indoor Hockey Championships bullied-off last evening at the National gymnasium. This competition is unique on the Guyana Hockey Board’s Calendar as it is the sole competition in which teams are seeded and play with goal handicaps according to ranking. The competition is divided into senior and junior divisions.
In the senior division, defending champions, the PEPSI Hikers, are the top seeds beginning each match with score of zero. The Hikers boast a full complement of stars in their line-up, many of whom have recently returned from Guyana’s successful outing at the PAHF Indoor Cup in Uruguay. Leading their side will be the exciting duo of Jamarj Assanah and Aroydy Branford with Captain Robert France adding his own high energy brand of hockey.
GCC enters the tournament with a +3 goal handicap and will feature the DeGroot brothers along with the ever-rising Mark Sargeant. Tony Cole and Aderemi Simon’s Old Fort Vikings enjoy a +5 handicap, Saints (+6), Blue Steel (+7), defending junior champions Old Fort Gladiators (+8) and Kingston Hockey (+10).
In the junior division which features both female players and younger male players, the GCC Tigers, featuring national sweeper Ulrica Sutherland and top indoor midfielder Trisha Woodroffe, are with a zero handicap. Defending ladies champs, the Spartans (+1), will benefit from the tough defence of Marzana Fiedtkou and dazzling stickwork of Aliyah Gordon on the strike line. Maria Munroe and the Hikers ladies are (+3), Pitbulls (+6), Saints (+6), under-19 mix (+7), Hikers Revelation (+8) and Old Fort Shooting Stars (+15).
The competition will see each team beginning their matches with a goal advantage according to their handicap. The tournament usually produces a fast paced and exciting brand of hockey as stronger teams face the pressure of coming behind from the opening whistle.
The tournament continues throughout the week with the exception of Friday with the two finals scheduled to begin at 18:00hrs on Sunday.
