Curt La Rose of the Flying Ace Cycle Club (FACC) on Sunday rode away with the fourth Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) 50-mile cycle event held in Upper Corentyne Berbice. The race, which was sponsored by the
Bank’s Corriverton, Berbice Branch was organized by the Flying Ace Cycle Club and saw the riders peddling off from in front of the bank to Adventure on the Corentyne Coast and back to the place of origin.
La Rose who hails from Mahaicony, Region five, made sure his trip to the other side of the river was worthwhile when he out sprinted his rivals to secure his first major event.
As the cyclists were sent on their way from in front of the bank by its officials a number of riders were out early. Among the front riders were Dwight Holder, Turan Harris, Nashane Jaundoo, Jeban Crawford, Sean Israel and Everald Mundy. The riders were quickly into their stride as they open up a sizable lead on the rest of the field which they maintained for the first quarter of the race. However the chasing pack led by La Rose and Ray Millington was quickly closing in and caught up with the breakaway bunch just about the turn back point at Adventure.
They continued at a blistering pace as a number of riders started to fade with a four man bunch of Mundy, Larose and Israel and Harris leading the way with about seven miles to go.
Israel faded quickly as La Rose, Harris and Mundy continued the race to the line. However it was the younger La Rose, who upped his pace to out sprint the others with Harris riding in second and Mundy third.
There was also a ding dong battle for the other places with Israel, Crawford, Holder and Millington locked in battle. However it was the hungrier Millington who got the better of Crawford and Holder for the other two placing with Israel losing out.
The sprint point prizes were shared between Mundy and Crawford with two each, while Harris, La Rose, Holder and Jaundoo snaring one apiece.
In the 20 miles event for beginners, which began at No 36 Village to the finishing line, Baiesh Sadeo won from Barman Narine ahead with Roopchand Kidernauth and David Sampson occupying the other spots. Sadeo also took both spring point prizes.
Top female cyclist Marica Dick of the FACC rode away with the female 12-mile event. The female event began in front of the Number 51 Police Station and ended at GBTI Corriverton Branch and saw Dick riding away from Crystal Lambert of Trojan Cycle Club with Christen Matherson third.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony Bank Manager Keiola Blackman stated that the event was part of the Bank’s policy of being a good cooperate citizen and giving back to the community from which they garner their support.
Miss Blackman thanked all of the participants for their support of the event. Prizes and gifts were presented to all the participants by the bank, while Ms Blackman promised that the organization will continue the venture. (Samuel Whyte)
