Guyanese boxers continue to endorse the faith placed in them and welterweight pugilist, Eon Bancroft, has emulated his countryman, Dennis Thomas when he eked out a 2-1 verdict over of Sri Lankan, Maduranga Pathirage Don at the Sports and Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, yesterday morning.
Like his countryman, Bancroft moves up to compete in the round of sixteen and will next face Tulani Mbenjie of the Republic of South Africa. The latter boxer earned his spot in the round of sixteen also by a close 2-1 margin over Kenyan, Rayton Okwiri.
Meanwhile, in latest news, Thomas lost a 3-0 decision to Irishman Connor Coyle to bow out of the competition.
And in athletics – both men in the 400m qualified for today’s semi-finals. Stephan James and Winston George placed second in their respective heats. James’ time was 46.39 behind Chris Brown of the Bahamas, and George returned a 46.25 behind Solomon of Trinidad. Both compete in the semi’s at 8:18 pm today.
Adam Harris also ran today – he placed 5th in his semi-final heat of the men’s 100m. His time of 10.23 was just outside the qualifying time for the finals.
In squash, Alexander Arjoon lost in the Men’s Consolation Finals to Chilambwe of Zambia 3 to 1. (5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-8). He is joined by team mate Sunil Seth at 11:30 AM to play the team from Papua New Guinea. At 12:30, Arjoon is joined by Nicolette Fernandes as they face Australia in the Mixed Doubles.
In table tennis, Trenace Lowe, Natalie Cummings, Chelsea Edghill, Chris Franklin and Idi Lewis are all in action today.
In swimming, Onika George swan close to her PB in the 50m backstroke, her time of 34.64 was good for 8th place in the second heat. This was the last swimming event Guyana will participate in for the remainder of this competition.
After day two in shooting, Lennox Braithwaite is in 14th place with 251-27v, and Mahendra Persaud finished the day in 22nd with a score of 248-20v. Today is the final day of the Queen’s Prize Individual finals.
