The Port Mourant Turf Club, which is one of the better Horseracing entities in the country, on Sunday successfully held its eagerly anticipated Champion Of Champions one day Horserace meet.
The well organized event, although off to a late start, came off with a bang with a number of upsets and brilliant performances highlighting the day.
It was a day when CP Got Even classified D3 owned by attorney at law Rajendra Poonai of the Elcock and Poonai Stable and trained by the wily Colin Elcock, decided to put on its best performance so far to take the feature D and lower event, racing away with the sumptuous $1M and Trophy up for grabs compliments of Beverage giants Bank DIH for its first win on Guyana’s soil.
Passion for Song, Red and Lovely and Good Will Boy were in the early lead with CP Got Even closing in fast. With the sumptuous $1M and the beautiful Banks DIH trophy available, the race picked up speed early and by the time the horses hit the first turn they were in full stride. Into the back stretch the horses were at full throttle with the lead exchanging hands with Red and Lovely and the Kentucky Bred CP Got Even ridden by Rad Drepaul with a weight of 113 pounds leading the way.
Around the far turn it was still a ding dong battle with Jack In My Style coming into the reckoning. With the finishing line approaching, Drepaul continued to press with CP Got Even as it galloped home ahead of a fast finishing Jack Is My Style with Red and Lovely and Good Will Boy rounding out the money.
It was a good day for the Colin Elcock stable as Quiet Dancer ridden by Paul Delph ran a brilliant homestretch to take the Three-Year Old Guyana and West Indian bred 1300M race and the $500,000 and trophy as it upset Unsettled, Release the Beast and Settling Jet.
Right to Rule of The Jagdeo stable with Trinidadian Nicholas Patrick had all rights to claim the $500,000 and trophy available as it ruled the roost in the E3 and lower 1200M event for a gate to pole victory from Fresh Again and the Message.
The G1 and Lower 1200M event saw Another Jet of the Gray stable with Ramnauth on the mount taking off down the homestretch to win the $400,000 winner’s money and trophy from Rosetta and Traditional man.
Mr. Inshan Bacchus’ Storm Bird ridden by Randolph Richmond was in winner’s row in the Two-Year Old Guyana and West Indian Bred 1000M race as it ran away with the $300,000 prize and trophy in its ongoing duel with Its My Choice and Keep On Swinging.
The Road Is Mine trained by Gray with Ramnauth showed that its name is no fluke in winning the $200,000 in the J and Lower1200M event ahead of Royal Intention and Magga Line.
The final event which was over a distance of 1200M saw both the ‘I’ and K class horses taking part due to time constraint. The ‘I’ class category for $250,000 was won by I Will Get Another with Appadhu from the Road is Mine and Affinity.
The K class winner was Wheel Barrow.
The Elcock stable rode away with the top stable award with Ramnauth taking the champion jockey prize, while Elcock was adjudged the top trainer on show. They were presented with awards compliments of the organizers. (Samuel Whyte)
