Head of State Donald Ramotar says that he believes that any investor building a Hotel in Guyana the size and scale of the Marriott and the Sun and Sand Hotel should have a Casino Licence.
Ramotar expressed this view while interacting with reporters at State House last Saturday.
“I would like to amend the law that anyone building a hotel of that size and nature should have a licence,” he said.
Under the Gambling Prevention Act, the country is restricted to issuing only three licences.
The Princess Hotel secured the first, the Marriott the second and recently Sun and Sand, which recently held a sod-turning ceremony, will hold the third, hence the need to amend the laws to allow for more casino licences to be issued.
In 2007 when the then administration decided to introduce Casino Gambling in Guyana it was vehemently protested particularly by the opposition and religious community.
The law was eventually approved but restricted Guyanese from entering the casino and as a result prevented from gambling.
