Residents of Plantation Best, West Coast Demerara, have been forced to endure the terrible stench emanating from broken tombs in a nearby cemetery for the past few years.
The cemetery and its many broken tombs lie on both sides of one of the village’s main access roads. Reports are that the smell would from sometimes drive affected residents to remain indoors.
Residents are appealing for steps to be taken to resolving the problem.
When Kaieteur News visited the area, a resident who lives opposite the cemetery, said that her family had lived in the area for 17 years and they, like most residents, were forced to endure the environmental pollution.
“I have been living here for seventeen years and over the years it got worse. More and more the tombs crack open and I’m not sure if it’s the sun or the animals walking on them or if they just build bad mek that happen but it does smell really stink” the resident explained.
“We does got to shut up the house and stay inside or stay at the back yard sometimes. It does get real stink,” she said.
Lamenting that the situation seems to be heading downhill, she stated that after families would have buried their loved ones, they seldom return.
“Nobody comes back to see what happen to their family. Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day you see people come, but other than that, they don’t check back and the tombs are cracking and it’s affecting we who live here.”
She explained that the cemetery road is the “entrance used by over 300 people” which includes residents of neighbouring Crane.
“The authorities not doing anything so we don’t bother complaining over and over again.”
Also speaking with Kaieteur News, one shop owner explained that the smell would become so “overbearing” that he and his family would often have to close their business.
“It does smell really, really bad. We complained to the NDC before but they haven’t done anything.”
“Plenty of the tombs crack open and when you pass or if lil breeze blow, you getting all the stink this way and you just got to deal with it because you already lay your life foundation here.”
Another resident similarly told Kaieteur News that “I think that it’s because so many tombs ‘buss’ and them body decaying in de open. I been living here for the past two years and it does smell bad but nobody tries to fix it.”
She also claimed that it is only on Mothers’ and Fathers’ Days that the cemetery receives any visitors.
