Terrance Phillips, 24, was shot to his lower left abdomen by two teenagers during what he described as a “desperate” attempt by them to “get fast money.”
Phillips, of Lot 1572 Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt said that when he returned home after work on July 01, last, he was keen on meeting his girlfriend who lives a short distance from his home.
He said that around 19:10 hrs while heading to her home, the two youths intercepted him between C and D Fields, Sophia and shot him before escaping with his two “cheap” phones and a lunch-kit.
On the hospital’s bed yesterday, Phillips explained, “After them boys shoot me, they enter my pocket and take out my two cheap phones. If they had gone with the phones alone, I would have said that they looking for it, but after I see they gone with my lunch-kit, I said yes, they really desperate.”
According to Phillips, after his surgery, ranks from the Turkeyen Police Station visited him at the hospital and took a statement.
He said that it is now almost two months and no police officers met with him to discuss the progress of the investigation.
The 24-year-old man explained that he was discharged from the hospital after six days. Doctors had removed the bullet from his abdomen.
However, after bouts of abdominal pains, he revisited the hospital to be examined. After undergoing a number of testes, including an X-ray, he was informed by medical practitioners that the bullet had damaged other organs within his abdomen.
To rectify this, he underwent a number of surgeries which left him bedridden to date.
A tearful Phillips said, “I was 170 pounds and now I weigh 120 pounds. Is bare pain and stress I going through for two cheap phones and a lunch-kit.”
Phillips posited that he was employed at a fishery located on the East Bank of Demerara and because of his medical situation, he is unable to provide for his mother.
Fighting to hold back tears, the 24-year-old man related that, “all I want is justice, because I don’t want anybody to get shoot for something like this and end up in a situation like me. This is ridiculous.”
