– cops detain supervisor
Residents of Grove, East Bank Demerara were left without potable water for several hours, after workers operating heavy duty equipment dug up a roadway on Saturday night to pull out an excavator that was submerged in mud.
The crewmen reportedly clashed with officials from the Grove/Diamond Neighbourhood Democratic Council, since they had failed to seek the Council’s permission before digging up the roadway.
The brazen act resulted in police taking the foreman into custody and Kaieteur News understands that he may be charged with damage to property.
According to a source, the crewmen claimed that they were conducting work near the roadway known as ‘Police Station Street’ or ‘Third Bridge Street’ for the Ministry of Housing. However, an excavator that was being used became mired in silt.
When all efforts to pull it out failed, the foreman reportedly ordered the men to dig a deep crater across the roadway, in an effort to haul out the excavator. This occurred sometime on Saturday night.
Residents said that when NDC officials arrived on the scene one of the senior crewmen boasted, “If y’all feel you is big boys, we got bigger boy that we could call,” and mentioned the name of a top Housing Ministry official.
Police from the Grove Police Station were informed of the incident and took the foreman into custody.
Kaieteur News understands that the foreman had promised to repair the road immediately after hauling out the excavator. The crew eventually got the machine out at around 16.00 hrs. However, the crater across the roadway has not been filled. Persons traversing the area had to seek alternative routes.
The crew also broke a water main and several residents were left without potable water until the main was repaired late yesterday.
