Dear Editor,
I am disappointed about the manner in which the PNCR elections were conducted, which prompted longtime party member Aubrey Norton to withdraw his candidacy for leadership of the party and as a result the incumbent Brigadier David Granger was returned at the helm.
According to reports, Norton complained of an inflated Delegates List, prompting PPPC and AFC members to make disparaging comments that the party has gone back to its roots of rigging elections.
Several delegates from Region Ten, including strongman Sharma Solomon, were not accredited to vote and a group of Lindeners stormed the area where the voting was taking place and there was commotion after the protesters tried to stop the voting. News reports state that a bodyguard fired a shot into the ground in an attempt to restore order.
Unfortunately, I am not privy to information whether or not if there was justification for disenfranchising Solomon and the other Lindeners. The protestors were supporters of MP Vanessa Kissoon, who was engaged in an altercation with party General Secretary Oscar Clarke who has been a PNC member from the inception of the party and served as leader of the youth arm before being elevated as Minister of the government.
It seems as if the protestors were also supporters of Norton, who also hails from Linden, and like Clarke,
has been a party supporter since he was a teenager.
The allegations against the party leader and executive members do not auger well for the already weakened movement with the formation of the AFC and the inactivity of former leader Robert Corbin and a few other stalwart.
A few critics are calling for Granger to hold fresh elections, but I do not think this would be a good move.
It seems to me that the commotion at the Congress is a clear indication that the PNCR is not ready to govern and unfortunately the PPPC will continue to be the leading party in the country to select the President. However I am of the firm view that it will never be able to muster 50% of the votes to control Parliament
