Guyana’s middleweight pugilist, Dennis Thomas, scored a 3-0 verdict over Jonathon Keama of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to register the first victory for Guyanese boxers at the Commonwealth Games at the Sports and Exhibition Centre, Glasgow, Saturday evening last.
The lanky Guyanese pugilist will next square off with Connor Coyle in the last 16. Reports are that Coyle progressed to that stage after a convincing, unanimous decision victory over southpaw, Lungile Dyamdeki; he was hardly tested to gain the nod on all three of the judges’ scorecards.
The consensus seems to suggest that Thomas will have to be at the top of his game if he is to get past Coyle. Reports of the Coyle victory state that he landed the more accurate and direct punches throughout and dictated the pace of the fight. He kept the dangerous, Dyamdeki at distance with a patient, competent display of boxing to book his place in the next round.
On the other hand, Thomas, it was reported, also experienced little trouble taking care of Keama and was adjudged winner on all three of the judges’ scorecards.
Earlier, local bantamweight pugilist, Imran Khan had surrendered a lopsided verdict to Kenyan, Benson Gicharu while bantamweight boxer, Eon Bancroft and his female counterpart, middleweight Theresa London, are scheduled to get into action soon.
