In living our lives every day sometimes forget to be compassionate to each other.
In other words, we lose our compassionate edge.
It is of critical importance not to get so busy that you turn a blind eye to wrong doings going on around you or persons in need. You can become complacent and say, ‘I know there’s trouble in the world. It’s regrettable. But as long as it doesn’t touch me personally, I’d prefer not to think about it. Cheating goes on every day in business and politics. That’s just the way things are. But most of us simply turn our faces the other way and pretend we don’t know its happening. The sad fact is that even religious organizations that faithfully advocate truth and justice fail in this area. Why? Because they’re afraid of being identified with those who promote a ‘social gospel’. But this should not be the case. Let us not love with just words but with actions and in truth.’ What moves you? Success in business? Building a great family? Those are worthy goals, but what will really make a difference in the world is standing up for those in need and standing up for what is right.
Mother Teresa said, ‘The biggest disease today isn’t leprosy or cancer. It’s the feeling of being uncared for, unwanted – of being deserted and alone. That’s how many people feel in today’s world because they are being taken advantage of by systems and governments and policies that were not designed to favour them.
We sit on the sidelines and say “well I can’t do anything about that… I am just one individual.”
If Martin Luther King, Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela or other great men had thought that way, the course of history would not have been forever changed. Many privileges that we enjoy today and take for granted might not have been in place.
It all began in the minds of these great leaders with one word …Compassion !
They had compassion for the sufferings of others and were willing to do something about it!
Sometimes we get immune to the maltreatment meted out to the less fortunate because it is happening so often.
Like wearing a watch, you get used to it and after a while you don’t even notice it. But we must never become de-sensitised to human suffering.
Let’s make a conscious decision to look around today for something you can do to help someone less fortunate.
Even if it’s just to speak up against an injustice being meted out to someone, it’s a beginning and you are on your way to making a positive difference in the world.
Remember, the longest journey begins with a single step…take that step today!!!!!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Dear Creator please show me ways to be compassionate towards my fellow human beings. Help me to be the kind of person that would stand up for truth and justice and not turn a blind eye to the suffering all around me.
